Position Summary:If you are interested in the opportunity to work aboard one of the most advanced university research vessels in the world apply today! The R/V Sikulaiq is a 261-foot oceanographic research ship capable of bringing scientists to the ice- choked waters of Alaska and the polar regions. We are currently accepting applications for temporary relief 1st Assistant Engineer.







The relief 1st Assistant Engineer of the R/V SIKULIAQ is lead under the direction of Chief Engineer to assist in the management of the global class, ice-capable oceanographic research vessel's propulsion and power plant machinery. Including all scientific and auxiliary machinery equipment aboard the 3665 LT, vessel of the University National Oceanographic Laboratory System (UNOLS). The R/V SIKULIAQ is operated by the University of Alaska Fairbanks SFOS - Seward Marine Center with home port in Seward, Alaska.



This is a NT Non-Exempt Temporary Non-benefitted position, UAF Marine Engineer job family, Grade 80, step 12, placement will be DOE. There will be additional compensation for time spent at sea.



Qualified applicants must possess a valid U.S. Coast Guard Unlimited Oceans Horsepower Motor 1st Assistant Engineer license, Merchant Mariner credential, STCW-95 endorsement, and U.S. Passport. The Seward Marine Center (SMC) campus is a 13 acre field station under the School of Fisheries & Ocean Sciences on the waterfront of Resurrection Bay (). R/V Sikuliaq information:



Each applicant must attach the following documents to be considered for position: a) resume; b) list of 3 references with complete current contact information; c) copy of USCG unlimited Oceans 1st Assistant Engineer license or credential (attach as supplemental document 1); d) valid driver's license (attach as supplemental document 2). e) valid passport; f) valid TWIC and g) valid health card.



Applicants will be required to provide documentation of participation in random drug testing program for at least 60 of the preceding 185 days, did not have any positive test results, and did not refuse to take a required test. If not under employment, where a random drug testing program exists, the applicant shall provide a completed test indicating they are free of illegal substance abuse, when requested by Seward Marine Center, prior to employment. Testing will be for the presence of cocaine, opiates, marijuana (THC), amphetamines and PCP (phencyclidine). Testing will be in accordance with the Department of Transportation Program and testing shall be in accordance with United States Coast Guard Drug and Alcohol Testing guidelines outlined in the Federal Register 46 C.F.R. 4, 5, and 16.

It is the policy of the University of Alaska Fairbanks that all employees are required to attend training to meet the requirements of the positions they hold, and to complete the required training within a specified period of time to remain employed at UAF. Any offer of employment is contingent on the background check.Pursuant to University Regulation 04.07.020, new employees of the University are employed in an at-will probationary status for the first six months of employment. 1st Relief Assistant works for the Chief Engineer under the Master in coordination with the Chief Mate, Senior Cook, SMC Marine Superintendent, Port Engineer, and Senior Marine Technician, preparing the vessel for upcoming science missions and logistics. In addition the Principal Investigators, Scientists and students will be involved in specific planning of logistics and preparing the vessel for the immediate upcoming science missions. The 1st Assistant under the Chief Engineer is a member of the ship''s crew, as directed by the Master will assist and participate in all emergency drills and training, in coordination with vessel department leads to help insure all operations are safe for crew and science party welfare, vessel material readiness and regulatory compliance.Essential



1st Relief Assistant, as engineering department lead, has knowledge and experience of the procedures required for engine department documentation and equipment logs to be managed, maintained and submitted to the Chief Engineer. The requirements can be regulated by the following but are not limited to the following: U.S. Coast Guard, Federal Regulatory Agencies, owner (NSF), UNOLS & UA requirements, 33CFR, 46 CFR, SOLAS, ISM, and MARPOL. The 1st Assistant is a lead for all administrative management of the data management system, Wheelhouse module or similar management system for all vessel propulsion, power and equipment to include but not limited to preventive maintenance, spare part inventory, purchasing, work orders, hull inspection and ship record conditions. Detect and recognize symptoms of impending malfunction or failure of all equipment and take positive action to restore to normal operating conditions.Essential
