STScI is seeking a Software Engineer to support software development and deployment for data analysis applications. The Science Software Branch supports calibration and science software development, primarily using Python and C, for the Hubble Space Telescope, James Webb Space Telescope, and other space-based astronomy missions. We also support open-source Python software development for astronomy through contributions to and technical oversight of the astropy project.

This position will be responsible for Linux and OS X software deployments in a fast paced multi-mission environment. Primary duties will include building, testing, and packaging software developed in-house at STScI for release to a wide audience using the Conda package management system. Additional responsibilities include working with development teams to fix bugs, refactor code, and apply general workflow optimization as needed. The candidate will utilize their operating system knowledge, shell scripting and programming experience, to automate redundant tasks, develop utilities for use by team members, science staff, and end-users abroad.

Requirements

The most qualified candidate must be able to proactively identify problems and implement solutions, and offer guidance to development teams and end-users. A strong background in Linux systems administration and virtualization is desired (RHCSA or better preferred). The candidate should also be comfortable working in non-GUI environments. Familiarity using Git in a team setting is required, while managing GitHub at an organizational level is a major plus.

Basic experience required in building and testing complex software systems, configuration management, and supporting software on multiple platforms (especially Linux and Mac). A working knowledge of a scripting language such as Python, including having experience building and installing Python packages, would be a major plus. Prior experience on a medium to large software project in a functional environment such as a full internship or a full college semester project desired. Candidate should also have strong analytical, problem-solving, planning and organizational skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential.

This position requires US Citizenship or Permanent Residence in order to meet ITAR requirements.

Substitution of additional relevant education or experience for stated qualifications may be considered.

STScI offers an excellent benefits package, tuition reimbursement, competitive salaries, and a stimulating environment. Interested candidates are requested to complete an on-line application through our website at and attach a resume in the "Resume Upload Section." Please include job # 16-0333 in the filename.
