Job Description

The Project Engineer is responsible for providing technical expertise and support on engineering projects for pet food manufacturing plants through all phases of project development and execution. Responsible for the design, development, implementation, startup and maintenance support on engineering projects. Works under direction of the Corporate Engineering Manager or may have overall project responsibility. This is a great opportunity for someone to work on a wide range of projects throughout the entire corporation. This is a hands-on position with extensive interaction with production and maintenance.

Essential Tasks:

  • Works on specific phases or aspects of projects such as conducting technical studies, budgeting, alternative evaluation, designing / engineering, bidding, economic evaluation, scheduling, preparation of specifications, construction, start-up and troubleshooting

  • Support continuous improvement including process improvements

  • Be a resource for the maintenance department

  • Identify and implement cost reduction projects

  • Become subject matter expert on projects and equipment

  • Design and manage projects in all aspect of the plant(s) including material handling, conveying, food processing, blending / mixing, packaging, facilities and utilities

Skills and requirements:

  • Design typical food processing and packaging systems including:

    1. Pneumatic / screw / belt conveying system

    2. Extruders, driers, oven, scales, blenders, grinders

    3. Liquid handling - pumps, piping, valves

    4. Form / fill / seal, SURP, cartoners and bulk bag packaging equipment

  • Experience in food manufacturing sanitary equipment design and installation is preferred

  • Design equipment to be made by American Nutrition's own fabrication shop

  • Interpret design philosophy with production and maintenance employees and actively promote a continuous improvement culture

  • Evaluate and recommend process improvements to maximize design quality

  • Provide management with reports regarding compliance, status, action items, and problems

  • Requires BS degree in Mechanical, Agricultural, Manufacturing, Electrical or Industrial Engineering and 4+ years of applicable experience

  • Proven track record of managing projects on time and on, or under, budget.

  • Foster a safe and high quality working environment

  • Must be promotable to take more responsibilities

  • Promote open communications and solicit cross-functional input from the CEO to the plant operators

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Auto-Cad

  • Must be creative in developing solutions and alternatives

  • Assist the Automation group in developing operating logic

  • Building code and basic structural knowledge would be helpful

Work Environment:

  • 10% - 25% travel maybe required at times to other plants and equipment suppliers

  • Must be able to work in a schedule-driven 24 hour operation environment with a customer service orientation to support plant operations and maintenance

  • Pre-employment drug, skills, and background testing required

  • Food Safety and Good Manufacturing Practices, including appropriate safety equipment apply

  • While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to sit, climb stairs, ladders and walk plant floors that could exceed one mile of travel per day

  • Must be able to understand and follow work instructions in English
