The Project Engineer is responsible for driving continuous improvement initiatives for all manufacturing systems from unloading to packaging in order to improve plant safety, quality, productivity, and reliability. The Project Engineer is also responsible for managing capital projects, supporting daily plant operations, and managing the technology transfer process for all parts of the raw to packaging areas. Principal Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for all aspects of capital project management: MOC Management, project definition, project planning, capital expenditure management, project timeline management, and technology transfer associated with capital projects and new products packaging from engineering to operations including training
  • Supports the development and implementation of process improvements (reliability, waste, product quality, safety, cost per pound) to meet business needs. This includes working with operating AM teams and participating in the area Small Group and CI meetings
  • Participates in the design, specification, development, installation, plant start-up, troubleshooting, and technology transfer for new products/equipment and cost saving initiatives, including collaboration with global process engineering for design standardization
  • Provide plant support for diet commissioning including capability assessment, development of processing and equipment specifications
  • Serve as primary resource to operating technicians for trouble shooting issues involving design, safety, production, quality defects, process changes and equipment modification by soliciting feedback and driving continuous improvement
  • Develop and maintain specifications, technical documentation, and procedures for processing and equipment which are consistent with KPI goals and support Quality and EOHS Standards
  • Supports the factory SOP's associated with new products and process improvements
  • Understand and comply with Hill's policies, safety standards, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) and Food Safety.
  • Identify and report Food Safety issues to management
This is not an exhaustive list of duties or functions. Education/ Experience Requirements Basic qualifications include:
  • BS in Engineering, Processing Technology , or related field
  • Minimum of 1 year manufacturing or comparable military experience
  • Must be able to read and develop piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), process flow diagrams (PFDs)
  • Must be proficient with MS Word/Excel/Access/PowerPoint
  • Able to support a 24/7 operation an able to work any shift, weekends, or holidays and be on-call
Preferred qualifications include:
  • Proficient in Statistical Process Control, CPk and Continuous Improvement Methodologies
  • Food Related Manufacturing Experience with good knowledge of operations
  • Food safety and sanitation design and practices
  • Previous experience with bulk material handling systems, including raw materials and finished product
  • Technical proficiency including:
    • Extrusion / Packaging technology
    • Standards, weights and measures requirements
    • AIB, FDA, USDA and other regulatory agency design requirements
Expected Areas of Skills:
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Prepare and present business and technical summaries, estimates, and budgets
  • Teamwork orientation with excellent interpersonal and team skills
  • Demonstrated performance of attention to detail, follow-up, and analytical decision making
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize duties
  • Computer skills including; Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and email
  • Works with cross functional teams to implement and maintain CP Best Practices for Factory Performance and Reliability
  • Works with raw material and equipment suppliers to improve quality, reliability, cost, and safety
  • Prepares engineering estimates, savings analysis, and project justifications for capital projects
  • Knowledge of HACCP, GMPs, and SPC
  • Must be able to bend, climb, crawl, work in confined spaces, work in hazardous condition spaces, work in extreme weather conditions, use hazardous materials and lift up to 50 lbs. on continual basis and ability to work at heights of up to 120 ft., use a mechanical lift, or ladder
  • Must be able to work in a standard office environment
