We are seeking a highly motivated and talented individual with a strong background in protein engineering to join our carbon sequestration team at Caltech and USC. Our team has developed an enzyme-based technology to accelerate the sequestration of CO2 in natural waters. Mimicing the process the earth will follow to remove all of the anthropogenic carbon in the atmosphere, we are pursuing a path to safely and permanently mitigate CO2 emissions at the global scale. A critical next step is to scale the catalytic reaction in an industrial chemical reactor that preserves the enzyme's activity and viability. The project is joint between groups at Caltech and USC, but will be largely based at Caltech. Currently the project is being run out of our research groups, but as the technology progresses there may be further opportunity to join an external start-up that may form to take the developed prototype to a power plant scale proof of concept.
The successful candidate will facilitate the design and testing of reliable chemical reactors that fix the existing and commercially available enzyme in a solid-solution matrix without degrading its activity. Specifically the individual will be primarily responsible for the lab work associated with evaluating new designs, optimizing the performance of the reactor, and minimizing the costs associated with running the reaction. The candidate will test all designs at the lab bench and then implement the promising ones at the Caltech cogeneration power plant. As a member of a small team of oceanographers and geochemists, the successful candidate will collaborate closely with others outside their main area of expertise in enzyme biochemistry. The individual will also contribute to patent writing and new scientific publications..Ph. D. in Biochemistry or Chemical Engineering.
.Working knowledge of protein biochemistry and enzymology.
.Proven track record of contributing to innovative projects, including peer-reviewed publications.
.High level of creativity and productivity with strong biochemistry problem solving and analytical skills.
.Ability to shepherd chemical efforts into new directions to achieve project milestones.
.Excellent communication skills and ability to present rationale, key data, issues and accomplishments to other members of the team and external collaborators.
.Strong team orientation with highly collaborative approach to problem solving and openness to diverse points of view.
.Hands-on, resourceful, and results-oriented.
.1-3 years of experience in industrial enzyme chemistry.
.Knowledge of chemical reaction modeling.
.Experience and confidence in optimizing enzyme use/recycling in a solid+liquid bed reactor.
.Interest in possibly joining a start-up company based on the research.
