POSITION : Cloud Operations Engineer

DEPARTMENT : IT Operations

FLSA : Exempt


TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS :10% Overnight Travel Required within the U.S.

SCHEDULE : Must be willing to work in-an on-call rotation and be flexible to work various shifts


We are a dedicated and enthusiastic IT team, responsible for supporting the business by providing any infrastructure required to meet companywide goals. IT works closely with all departments at GreatCall to help deliver new products and services, both for our existing customers, as well as potential new markets. The Applications Operations team is responsible for deployment and support for all public facing and internal web applications and services. This position will also support various messaging, cloud service, monitoring and database server technologies and work closely with the development teams on new products and services.


As a Cloud Operations Engineer, you are responsible for developing, configuring, installing, and maintaining technology in a mission critical environment. This individual will participate in departmental projects by assisting in the development of project plans, documentation, and performing of project tasks. Responsibilities also include performing daily system maintenance tasks and participating in on-call duty. Additionally, this person must be able to function effectively in a fast-paced environment where projects may take as little as a few days from conception to deployment. This is achieved by executing our software configuration deliverables and database operations deliverables and assisting with the design and optimization of the deployment process to test and production systems. This position will work closely with our Software Engineering team to optimize performance and security on our public web infrastructure, and with the DevOps team to trouble shoot and diagnose root cause of issues as they occur in production


  • Develop system requirements for new application development and enhancements with Architects
  • Lead troubleshooting of issues that occur in production and coordinate the activities required for resolution with development and architects
  • Facilitate quick root-cause analysis for issues that occur in test and production environments
  • Assist with design and maintenance of web server infrastructure and custom developed applications
  • Coordinate maintenance and optimization of infrastructure used by the Software Development team to support automated deployments and continuous delivery of applications
  • Design custom monitoring dashboards for application performance monitoring in test & production environments
  • Develop, modify, support and maintain AWS-based components for public facing Infrastructure, application back-end and admin and monitoring features.
  • Create, maintain and enhance the following: Automate builds, test, validate and maintain infrastructure documentation for our AWS and local datacenter components.
  • Collaborate with our product engineering groups to engineer creative solutions for new product development
  • Provide 24x7 support for web applications & databases when required (on-call rotation)


Education: Bachelor's degree preferred or equivalent experience


  • Practical experience with most of if not all components of AWS: EC2, Beanstalk, ELB, Route53, S3, Cloudfront, SNS, SWF, SQS, RDS, DynamoDB, ElasticCache, IAM, CloudFormation & RedisLabs
  • 3+ years experience with configuration and maintenance of common web based applications such as Apache (1.x/2.x), Java based application Server architectures (Tomcat/Weblogic/nginx), IIS
  • 3+ years' experience with database systems (MySQL, PostgreSQL, and/or SQL Server)
  • 3+ years' experience with shell scripting
  • Prior experience with operating system (Linux) installation and patch administration
  • Prior experience with IT Automation tools such as Ansible, Puppet, Chef, or Teraform
  • Prior experience with enterprise monitoring solutions (Nagios, Zabbix, HP OpenView)
  • Prior experience with application monitoring solutions (DynaTrace, AppDynamics, DataDog, PRTG, Loggly etc)
  • Prior experience with Python, Ruby, ngnix, Cucumber, Celery, Django
  • Prior experience with Jenkins CI, Shipable, Strider, Git, and other Automated Deployments systems


  • Understanding of systems engineering, design and architecture
  • Proven ability to be able to document a RCA(Root Cause Analysis) for troubleshooting issues in test and production
  • Ability to collaborate with individuals from all levels of the organization
